YSC Staff

Sang & Charmain Yun

Sang and Charmain joined staff with YSC at a time when most students didn’t use email and Rose Walk (in front of SML) was a regular city street. Sang graduated from Yale in 1993 with a double major in Philosophy and Religious Studies and got his MDiv from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1996. Charmain graduated from Yale in 1995 with a double major in Sociology and East Asian Studies. They married in 1996 and have made New Haven their home since then, starting their work on staff in 1998.

Their son Jonathan (age 22) is wrapping up his studies at GA Tech. Kaylen (age 19) is a junior at Yale, and Navia (age 16) is in 11th grade at ESUMS, a New Haven public school. In 2018, Charmain transitioned out of full-time work with YSC. She received her MSW from UConn in 2021, and serves as the Executive Director at Christian Community Action, a local agency helping families experiencing homelessness. She is still involved with YSC as affiliate staff.

Alex & Bonnie Schurman

Alex studied Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, graduating in 2014. Bonnie studied English at Georgetown (BA in 2013, MA in 2017) and has served in college ministry ever since her undergraduate days.

Since the two of them met, Alex has become a fan of the Washington Nationals and college gymnastics, and Bonnie has learned to love cooperative board games and has begun to fumble her way through some of the dense theology books that Alex considers "fun" reading.

They love cooking, hanging out with their toddler Ruthie, and playing board games—and would love for you to join them for all of the above!

Kwaku Acquah

Kwaku (BK ‘23) joined YSC as a reluctant first year, uncertain of what the Lord would do in the next few years. Through the ups and downs of college life, YSC became his home; a home that he is happy to return to for another year. Kwaku graduated from Yale with a B.S. in Cognitive Science, though he probably spent as much of his time writing music. He loved getting involved in the community as a volunteer, EMT, and first year counselor, and he is incredibly excited to spend the next year walking alongside students in New Haven.

Kwaku can often be found talking about psychology, listening to music, exploring the city, getting lost in a good book, getting lost in real life, and cooking spicy foods. He looks forward to more memories, laughter, late night deep conversations, and God adventures with YSC this upcoming year.

Jessie Cheung

Having not grown up in a Christian family, Jessie (DC ’24) first learned about God through attending a Chinese church in Dallas. Through college ministry, she saw others her age genuinely wondering what it meant to put Jesus as the center of their life. This discovery made her seek out God beyond just Sunday sermons and Youth group but in daily life decisions and worries. Through breakups, friendship seeking, and mental health struggles, Jessie is so grateful for mentorship and fellow believers to guide her through this crazy journey of a life of faith and is so excited to do the same for others in this next year on staff!

As a Cognitive Science undergrad, Jessie enjoyed teaching introductory Computer Science to non-tech majors, conducting psychology research, and serving as a Davenport Student Aide. In her free time, she loves having long conversations, trying new restaurants, watching medical shows, and attempting to play the e-sports she loves watching.

Sarah Guan

Sarah (ES ‘23) joined YSC Staff in 2023 after growing in her walk with God and experiencing the sweet richness of deep community during her time as an undergraduate student in YSC. She graduated this past May with a BA in Economics and Mathematics and is currently pursuing an MPH in Healthcare Management at the Yale School of Public Health. Beyond academics, the highlight of these past four years was getting to know, love, and live in the city of New Haven, where she also resided for two summers.

Sarah is an avid hiker and musician. But when she’s not exploring trails or holed up in a practice room, you might also find her taking CT public transit to the local thrift store, trying to reach her annual reading goal on Goodreads, exploring the New Haven food scene, and staying informed about the latest news and trends in pop culture – and she would absolutely love for you to join her in all of these and more. Above all, she loves to connect and have long conversations with students (about anything and everything) and looks forward to growing together in faith this next year!

Toni Oluwatade

Toni (MY ‘24) became involved with YSC during her first year at the height of the pandemic in 2020. Amazed by how close her class in YSC became over Zoom, Toni found the YSC community to be extremely formative to her college experience, and she’s excited to join the staff team for this year between college and medical school. Toni graduated with a B.S. in Cognitive Science. During her time as an undergraduate, she enjoyed playing club and intramural soccer, mentoring and tutoring at Yale and in the greater New Haven area, and having hours-long conversations with friends on a variety of topics.

Toni is a podcast enthusiast, soccer fanatic, and deep conversation lover. She’d love to exchange podcast recommendations, play pick-up soccer games, and have long conversations about anything and everything and is excited to pursue Jesus alongside everyone in YSC this year!

Dan Pai

Daniel joined staff with YSC in 2024 after a year of volunteering for men’s ministry and PnP. He graduated Yale with a major in global affairs and an advanced language certificate in French and spent big chunks of his time in Elmseed, YSC, and Living Water as well as helping organize interministry. After graduating, he started working for a consulting firm.

When Daniel is chilling, you are most likely to find him jamming to worship music on his guitar/ cajon or expressing his bromantic love for Kwaku. If you have questions about faith or need some encouragement, he’s always available to talk.
